In this workshop, we'll be discussing how to imagine and enact just transitions with leading environmental justice organizers, scholars, and students. We will consider the tools that we use for imagining just transitions amidst and across geographies of inequality at different scales, from the international and regional scales to those of the neighborhood, the home, and the body. How are activists, scientists, artists, citizens imagining these transitions in specific ways; what are our expectations; what are the limits that constrain our imaginations and possibilities? Can we think of transition beyond economic frameworks that assume capitalist growth and beyond the economic language of efficacy and efficiency? What would “workable transitions” actually be like, and how might we enact them? Perhaps most importantly, who is the 'we' of these transitions – who and what guides this process and to what ends? At stake in this workshop is the question of what gets to count as legitimate knowledge in the struggle for a just transition; how to mobilize and articulate other modes of being and doing within but also against and beyond the academy?
